Singapore start-up transforms plastic waste into 3D-printed Merlion collectibles

In a creative blend of sustainability and 3D tech, Singapore-based start-up Unigons has designed a limited edition run of Merlion figurines made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. According to The Straits Times, each of the 60 Fortune Merlion collectibles, created specially for SG60, is crafted using approximately 30 discarded PET bottles, many of which were donated by beverage company Yeo Hiap Seng.

These Merlions are 18 centimeters tall, printed in ten different colorways, and packaged in blind boxes, a nod to the recent popularity of mystery collectibles. Designed by Unigons co-founder Joe Chua, each figurine features a waving left paw, reminiscent of the traditional Fortune Cat, and a pedestal base that conceals six interchangeable charms engraved with auspicious Chinese characters like “wealth” and “longevity”.

We added colourants to create custom hues before melting and extruding the plastic into filament suitable for 3D printing,” Chua told The Straits Times. “It’s not the fastest or cheapest route, but it’s the most meaningful one.

There was some general scepticism about the quality of 3D-printed collectibles, but Chua believes technological advances have created next-level opportunities. “We’re seeing recycled PET being used to create smoother, more durable, and more detailed products,” he said.
