Microsoft quietly launches Copilot 3D, a new AI tool for content creators

Microsoft has recently unveiled a new addition to Copilot Labs that could elevate the way creators work with 3D content. The company announced the release of Copilot 3D, an AI-powered tool that instantly turns flat 2D images into 3D models.

In a statement, Microsoft encouraged experiments: “Unleash your creativity, experiment boldly, and shape the future with us.” The tool allows users to upload common image files (JPG or PNG under 10MB) and convert them into GLB format, a commonly used standard for 3D assets in video games and design.

Practical applications are diverse, ranging from game development and animation to digital content creation and product design. One example is uploading a photo of furniture to produce a 3D model that can be zoomed in, rotated and viewed from any angle. According to Microsoft, Copilot 3D is best at handling inanimate objects with plain backgrounds, while complex figures such as people or animals remain a challenge and might require more sophisticated options.

The system also comes with a library of pre-made 3D models to inspire users. Microsoft emphasized responsible use: “At this time, Microsoft does not use uploaded images for training or personalization,” and users must only upload photos they have the rights to.

Copilot 3D is not the first entry in this space: competitors like Stability AI have introduced similar tools, including TripoSR, which can generate 3D models within seconds. Like Microsoft’s new tool, TripoSR also struggles with lifelike features but offers users both speed and accessibility.

For now, Copilot 3D is available to anyone with a Microsoft account, accessible via desktop or mobile browsers. By lowering the tech barriers of 3D modeling, the company hopes to broaden access. As Microsoft puts it, the goal is to make “3D generation easier for anyone to create new design formats.
