3D Systems and TISSIUM achieve FDA first in nerve repair with 3D printed implant

3D Systems and French MedTech innovator TISSIUM have collaborated to advance regenerative medicine, announcing FDA approval for a 3D printed bioabsorbable device for the repair of peripheral nerve damage.

Combining TISSIUM’s proprietary biomorphic programmable polymers and 3D Systems’ advanced bioprinting technology, the two companies co-invented COAPTIUM® CONNECT with TISSIUM Light, an atraumatic, sutureless implant designed to support nerve healing. This unique device has now received De Novo marketing authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a first in peripheral nerve repair leveraging 3D printing.

This is a significant advancement in patient care,” Scott Turner, vice president of advanced systems at 3D Systems, said in a press release. “It has been tremendously rewarding to work alongside the talented team at TISSIUM to design a complete 3D bio-printed solution that offers the potential for patients to recover from peripheral nerve damage.

The implant exemplifies a breakthrough in developing bioprinting’s clinical potential, with its high-resolution, elastomeric properties rarely seen in biodegradable devices. It marks another milestone in 3D Systems’ long-term commitment to regenerative medicine, which began with its 2017 joint development program with United Therapeutics to 3D print transplantable human lungs.

Whether in our medical device business… or through the work our regenerative medicine team is doing, 3D Systems is making a profound impact, said Dr. Jeffrey Graves, 3D Systems’ president & CEO. “This latest accomplishment by TISSIUM, enabled by our unique 3D printing technology, is one more example of how 3D Systems is transforming patient care for a better future.”

The global bioprinting market is prognosed to exceed $2.4 billion by 2029: growth that 3D Systems is set to help drive through continued innovation in patient-centered, customized 3D printed healthcare solutions.
