3D motion technology enhances patient care at Children’s Hospital Colorado Gait Lab

Children’s Hospital Colorado (Children’s Colorado) has equipped its renowned Center for Gait and Movement Analysis with Vicon’s latest motion capture system, Valkyrie, bringing next-gen 3D motion capabilities to patient-centered clinical care.

The Gait Lab is the only accredited gait and movement analysis lab in the region (and one of just 18 nationwide), featuring Valkyrie cameras that enable real-time 3D motion kinetics and kinematics. These upgrades help providers better assess how children walk, with or without mobility aids such as walkers or braces, and fine-tune customized treatment plans.

Our goal is to help our patients be as mobile and active as possible, said Lucas Moore, program developer at Children’s Colorado’s Gait Lab. “We are thrilled we can now offer new technology. With updated camera capabilities, our ability to better see how a patient’s body moves… helps our team of experts evaluate data quicker and craft the best treatment plans for our patients.

Vicon’s Valkyrie, launched in 2024, is the company’s cutting-edge optical motion capture system. Children’s Colorado, a longtime customer of Vicon’s, can now benefit from real-time, networked capture for deeper insights into movement disorders.

The Gait Lab evaluates around 550 patients annually from across the region, offering 3D video analysis, muscle activity measurement, and motion avatars – surprisingly, these are exactly the same technologies that are used for animation in CGI, be it video games, film, or VR.
The Gait Lab’s latest upgrade… ensures they remain at the forefront of motion capture technology,”  concluded George Miller, senior account manager at Vicon.
