Philips has launched “Fixables,” their novel approach to customer care: these 3D-printed replacement parts empower consumers to prolong the lifespan of their devices. This initiative offers open-access files to download and 3D print your own parts and accessories like cutting guides for a beard trimmer.
This project is a collaboration bringing together Philips Personal Health, 3D printer manufacturer (and makers’ icon) Prusa Research, and the divisions of LePub creative agencies in Amsterdam and Milan. “Fixables” enable customers to address the natural wear and tear of everyday personal care items, providing a sustainable solution to maintain product functionality without sacrificing quality. According to Philips, all printable parts are designed to meet their stringent quality and safety standards, to guarantee reliable performance of devices in need of repair.
Currently being piloted in the Czech Republic, where Prusa Research is based, the digital library of replacement parts is already globally accessible. Plans for broader availability are underway, with new components to be added over time. The open-source files are available via Prusa Research’s Printables.com and compatible with most 3D printers.
Circular-economy-oriented Philips highlights that using the recommended materials helps keep the printed parts working properly over time. The entire greener approach is a direct response to what the company’s customers have been asking for: more ways to repair their products. As Philips puts it, “77% of Europeans would rather repair their product than replace it, but most buy a new one anyway.”
The goal of the project is to make products last longer, prevent them from becoming waste too soon, and to give people more chances to keep using and enjoying their devices. By making 3D printing files for spare parts open source and ensuring their quality, Philips opens up repair possibilities for more people. Teaming up with the maker community is a good way to promote innovation while encouraging a repair-over-replace mindset.
